Council working to support Greater Shepparton Secondary College opening

Greater Shepparton City Council has been working collaboratively with the Victorian School Building Authority, the Department of Education and Training, and Regional Roads Victoria on many aspects of the Greater Shepparton Secondary College since building commenced last year.g

Council has since undertaken extensive planning for works and changes needed in the local area surrounding the school, to ensure that safe and appropriate arrangements are in place to support the expected increase in traffic.

Council has worked in conjunction with government agencies to confirm the infrastructure needed to be constructed in front of the school to support the increased student numbers, including bus stops, cycling and pedestrian paths.

These works will involve constructing new footpaths and bus stops along the school frontage on Hawdon Street and minor upgrade works at the Hawdon Street, Knight Street, Railway Parade and Andrew Fairley Avenue intersection. These works are funded under the joint-funded Victorian and Australian Government Road Safety Program, with construction planned to commence in October 2021 and be completed by school opening in January 2022.

Council advises that the construction of these works will require traffic management, including periods of partial road closure. A map showing the extent of these construction works is provided below.

Council has further been working to understand the changes needed to parking and signage in the streets surrounding the school. Council has recently completed a Local Area Traffic Management study which includes draft recommendations for these changes.

Director Infrastructure Phil Hoare said Council would be actively consulting with local residents and business owners to discuss these proposed changes and receive their input.

“We will provide an opportunity for local residents and business owners to meet with our team, review the proposed changes, and provide input to the parking and signage changes,” he said.

“We will be contacting local residents in the near future and organising this consultation. These changes are needed to ensure the area surrounding the school is well equipped to meet the increase in vehicle and foot traffic.”
