With National Ride2Work Day fast approaching on Wednesday 18 October 2023, Greater Shepparton City Council is encouraging residents to pull out their bikes and helmets, and join in the largest celebration of commuter riding.
National Ride2Work Day aims to support and celebrate the many health, wellbeing and environmental benefits riding provides. Whilst it is a good way to fit in some exercise on the journey to work, riding also has many environmental benefits including lower emissions, improved air quality, reduction in noise pollution and improved mobility.
Council’s Manager Environment, Sharon Terry, said National Ride2Work Day is a good opportunity for local organisations to encourage staff to get involved and ride to work to better understand how cost effective, environmentally friendly and healthy this transport option is.
“Council hope to see plenty of cyclists on the road on Wednesday 18 October to show their support behind National Ride2Work Day. Businesses can host a morning tea on this day to encourage staff to put on their helmets and cycle to work,” she said.
“Cycling is a wonderful way to travel around the region and Council is passionate about promoting sustainable and active transport options throughout the region.”
By swapping the car for a bike, Ms Terry said residents can get their recommended daily exercise without having to spend extra time or money at the gym.
“Beside the health benefits, riding to work is also an excellent way to reduce emissions in the municipality. An estimated 13 per cent of Greater Shepparton’s emissions come from transport,” she said.
“Riding your bike to work is an easy and healthy opportunity to save money on fuel and lower your carbon emissions.”
