Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, said the Goulburn Valley Highway Shepparton Bypass remains the top priority for the region but is hopeful that ongoing discussions with Deputy Premier Jacinta Allan will bear fruit.
Whilst a recent statement was made in relation to potential public action in relation to the bypass, Cr Sali insisted that Council is focused on working with the Federal and Victorian Governments to progress this project.
“Council has been consistently corresponding with the Deputy Premier in relation to this number one priority project for our region, with the most recent conversation between myself and the Deputy Premier occurring less than a week ago,” he said.
“There is no doubt in my mind that the significance of this project is well understood, including the importance of demonstrating the Victorian Government’s commitment in the midst of the Federal Government’s 90 day infrastructure review.”
Whilst the Victorian Government is yet to commit further funding, the Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has recently made statements in Parliament saying “he would work with the new Federal Government to fund the road”. Premier Andrews also said the Bypass was “a very important project” and said he would bring the case back before the Federal Government.
Cr Sali said it is pertinent that we work in partnership with the Victorian and Federal Governments to secure and progress this project for the benefit of our community and the region, and that we do this consistently as a community.
“Once funded, the Shepparton Bypass will transform the region’s freight capacity and improve safety for drivers and visitors to the region through diversion of significant volumes of heavy vehicle movement from Shepparton and Mooroopna’s CBD, as well as provide a much needed second river crossing, which we all know following the October 2022 floods is critical,” he said.
