It is now six years since the initial rollout of the green lid bins and kitchen caddies, and Greater Shepparton residents can now expect to receive their next complimentary roll of purple compostable bags.
Since the rollout, residents have demonstrated a commitment to improving waste management including sorting and placing waste in the appropriate bin and the use of the purple bags for food scraps. With this support, Greater Shepparton City Council have achieved great results with contamination rates continuing to drop for the green lid bin.
In the past six years approximately 47,000 tonnes of garden and food waste have been diverted from landfill. Council is proud of this achievement and will continue to provide the purple bags to assist residents in improving our management of waste. The next complimentary roll of purple bags will be delivered to homes from now until the end of March.
Council Director Infrastructure Gary Randhawa commended residents on their continuing efforts over the past year.
“This has significantly contributed to the success of composting in our municipality. It has not only saved ratepayers’ money but it also has wonderful benefits for our environment and economy,” he said.
“The composted material is predominately used to improve the health of the soil and its productivity and avoids taking up valuable landfill space.”
Mr Randhawa said the purple compostable bags meet strict Australian standards and are specifically designed to break down in the composting process.
“Please only use these Council provided bags in your kitchen caddy and green lid bin. Keeping contamination low is important as it ensures we fully reap the benefits of the service,” he said.
“I encourage residents to keep up the good work and help us work together to reduce waste to landfill and protect our environment.”
If you do not receive your complimentary roll of bags by the end of March please contact Council’s Customer Service team on (03) 5832 9700.
