Delivered with the support of Council's Positive Ageing Advisory Committee, the Safe and Connected Seniors sessions brought together more than 130 community members from across Greater Shepparton to learn about recognising the signs of elder abuse, accessing support services and staying safe and connected.
Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, said the campaign highlighted the importance of protecting older people and ensuring they felt valued, respected and supported.
"Every older person deserves to live free from abuse and feel safe, respected and connected within our community," he said.
"These sessions helped raise awareness of an issue that is often hidden while providing practical information and connecting older residents with organisations that can offer support.
"Council is proud to work alongside local organisations and community partners to help create a safer and more inclusive community for older people."
The sessions were held in Tatura, Shepparton, North Shepparton, Mooroopna and Murchison, as well as at several retirement villages. The strong participation demonstrated the value of bringing information directly to where older residents live and connect.
Attendees heard from a range of local organisations including Victoria Police, Council on the Ageing (COTA), Elder Rights Australia, Seniors Rights Victoria, Community Accessibility, Goulburn Valley Libraries and SMR Legal, who shared practical advice, information and support available to older people, their families and carers.
The campaign also included Council lighting key landmarks purple, including the Monash Park gum tree, Eastbank and the Mooroopna Water Tower, in recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Monday 15 June 2026 and as a visible reminder that elder abuse has no place in the Greater Shepparton community.
Council thanks all presenters, partner organisations and community members who contributed to the success of the campaign and helped continue the conversation about preventing elder abuse.
