Cyclists in Greater Shepparton and across the state now have the benefit of upgraded lighting at the Shepparton Cycling Precinct Velodrome, thanks to the Victorian Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Program.
In Summary
The improved lighting now meets AusCycling’s 300 lux LED lighting standard and is a boost to local club training and competition activities. The upgraded lighting also ensures the venue can support major BMX events, including warm-up requirements, team pit areas and pre-event staging components.
Other aspects of Shepparton’s BMX Track and Cycling Precinct upgrades that will be completed in the near future include a new multi-use pavilion at the adjacent BMX track, and enhancements to the BMX track and start hills, improving conditions for riders, spectators and broadcasters.
The two-storey pavilion will offer elevated views of the BMX track, creating a premium experience for spectators and serving as a new hub for events and community gatherings.
“The Shepparton Cycling Club hosted their annual Christmas Cycling Carnival under the revamped Velodrome lights in December last year, with around 1,500 visitors descending on Greater Shepparton to utilise the facilities,” Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali said.
“The new lights are a huge improvement and ensure we are well placed to support local club training and competition activities, as well as major events which draw thousands of people to our region.”
Check out the new lights in action in the video below.
The project is being delivered through the Victorian Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Program, in partnership with Greater Shepparton City Council.
The Regional Sports Infrastructure Program is delivering 16 projects across the state as part of the Government’s commitment to ensuring regional communities are even better places to live, work, stay and play.
“Shepparton is a premier local and national destination for cycling racing and this lighting upgrade helps bring the cycling velodrome up to community/club training and competition standards while opening up more opportunities for participation,” Minister for Community Sport, Ros Spence said.
“The upgrades are providing significant support for local riders and emerging talent and ensure we continue attracting major events right here in Shepparton.”
Shepparton Cycling Club President, Brett Lancaster OAM said the lights were a great addition.
“These new lights ensure safer conditions for our riders and club members and mean we don’t need to hire additional lighting for carnivals. We’re very happy with this support from Council and the Victorian Government,” he said.
