Greater Shepparton City Council’s Flood Recovery team, Resilience in Recovery, is excited to announce two upcoming events with well-known horticulturalist Sophie Thomson, aiming to share her expertise on gardening with our community.
In Summary
Sophie Thomson is an Australian horticulturalist, author, television and radio personality from Adelaide, and is a presenter on ABC's Gardening Australia and an ABC radio talk back host. She has extensive media experience writing for major newspapers, magazines and authors books on gardening.
The first event ‘Roots of Recovery’ will be held on Sunday 23 June 2024 from 9.15am to 4.00pm, at St Paul's African House, 54 Poplar Avenue Shepparton. This session will see Ms Thomson reconnect with our community and share her expertise on gardening for health and wellbeing. She will provide invaluable advice on practical steps to rebuild and rejuvenate your garden after the recent floods, focusing on resilience and sustainability.
During this engaging session, Ms Thomson will cover the health benefits of gardening and how it can enhance your wellbeing, step-by-step guidance on restoring your garden after flood damage, and tips and tricks for growing your own food, no matter the size of your garden.
There will be a courtesy bus running from Bunbartha and Murchison that residents can register a spot for. You can register a spot using the booking link on page two.
The second event ‘Growing our Gardens’ will be held on Monday 24 June 2024 in Murchison. This event will be held across two sessions, starting at the Murchison Community Garden, 19 Impey Street, Murchison from 9.00am to 10.30am before moving to Murchison Primary School, 8/10 Impey Street, Murchison from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
Sophie will be sharing her experience on the power of gardening for wellbeing, the benefits of growing your own food at home or in a shared garden, and offering practical tips to help you succeed. Whether you are a Murchison resident eager to discover more about the community garden and school project, or you are involved in another community project and want to bring these ideas to your own project, this is an exciting opportunity to learn from Ms Thomson.
This event will include a free bacon and egg roll at the Murchison Community Garden thanks to the Murchison Men’s Shed, a presentation from Ms Thomson at Murchison Primary School on connecting community to shared projects and how you can improve your own garden, and a free lunch to be shared at Murchison Primary School.
“These two events are a fantastic way to learn from one of Australia’s most beloved gardening experts, whilst connecting with fellow garden enthusiasts within Greater Shepparton,” Council’s Director Community Louise Mitchell said.
These activities are generously funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments in response to the October 2022 flood event which impacted Victorian communities in Greater Shepparton.
