Greater Shepparton City Council is excited to announce the new Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) building was completed on 22 January 2021, with a certificate of occupancy issued on 2 February 2021.
With the keys handed to Council, this has given the green light for tenants, SAM Limited, Kaiela Arts and the Greater Shepparton Visitor Centre, to start moving in.
SAM, Kaiela Arts and the Visitor Centre commenced transitioning to the new site as of 1 March. This is no mean feat, with SAM alone needing to relocate its collection comprising 4,000+ unique artworks to the new purpose-built facility over the coming months.
Kaiela Arts and the Visitor Centre will be fully operational from 31 March. The SAM Shop will also open on 31 March, allowing visitors to fully experience the ground floor of the new SAM building. Each of the three spaces is co-located, allowing visitors to move between the SAM Shop, Kaiela Arts and the Visitor Centre.
With the art museum located over four floors, levels two to four will remain closed until closer to the Grand Opening Weekend in October to enable SAM to complete the collection relocation and installation of exhibitions and new artworks throughout the entire building. The café and roof top bar and events space will also be opened in October in line with the Grand Opening Celebrations.
Wednesday 31 March will signify welcoming visitors to the ground floor of the building. Please remember the building will be open to the public in line with COVID-19 restrictions.
The official SAM Opening Celebrations in October will be unique and memorable, and nothing like Greater Shepparton has ever seen! The celebrations will be an explosion of energy and creativity, with something for everyone.
Save the date for 15-17 October 2021! More information will be provided at a later date.
