Shepparton Line Upgrade

The Victorian Government is upgrading the Shepparton Line to deliver more reliable services and allow modern VLocity trains to travel to Shepparton for the first time.

Work on the Shepparton Line Upgrade has already begun, with $356 million invested in the first two stages of the project, which has already delivered ten extra services a week between Shepparton and Melbourne.

Stage 2 will provide the infrastructure required for VLocity trains to run to Shepparton for the first time.

It includes a new stabling facility and platform extensions at key stations to suit the longer VLocity trains, as well as a crossing loop extension at Murchison East to give trains more room to pass each other, boosting reliability on the line.

Fifty-nine level crossings will be upgraded between Donnybrook and Shepparton to make them compatible with VLocity trains and improve safety for train passengers and road users.

The project is being delivered as part of the Regional Rail Revival program.

What is being done?

Site investigations will take place at each level crossing on the Shepparton Line between Broadford and Shepparton.

The investigations will include:

non-destructive digging
soil sampling
groundwater testing.

These works will take place between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday from Thursday 5 November to Monday 21 December 2020.

What to be aware of

These works are expected to be low impact, however you may notice an increase in noise and dust. There will be machinery, heavy vehicles and workers within the rail corridor, so please be mindful and observe all safety signage in place.

Health and safety

Shepparton Line Upgrade works are progressing under the current Third Step restrictions in Regional Victoria.

You may notice an increase of workers on projects as restrictions on construction sites start to ease. Large-scale public infrastructure projects are critical and strict COVIDsafe Plans are in place on all project sites across Victoria. Workers on all sites are required to wear face masks unless they meet any of the criteria for exception – such as a medical condition for Occupational Health and Safety guidelines.
